Big Ten Basketball Players to Know: No. 26 – Matt Costello

No. 26 – Matt Costello, F (Michigan State)

2013-14 Stats: 4.0ppg, 3.3rpg, 0.8apg, 1.3bpg, 59.8 FG %, 66.0 FT %, 14.7min.

Career Stats: 2.8ppg, 2.4rpg, 0.5apg, 0.9bpg, 56.3 FG %, 70.1 FT %, 10.7min.

Why you should know him: With Adreian Payne off to the NBA, it means next man up for the Spartans. Given the minutes Costello played last season he’s the likeliest player to replace at least his ability on the rebounding side of things. Costello started 20 games last season, so he’s no stranger to the spotlight, but the big question is can he be a go-to scorer up front.

The answer came last season against No. 15 Iowa on the road. Costello went for a double-double with 11 points and 12 rebounds — totals there were season and career highs. Now it’s just about consistently becoming a double-digit scorer and above average rebounder too. He’s got the post moves and the right attitude to be a force on the inside in the Big Ten this season.
