Change is afoot for Big Ten basketball scheduling

Published

on

On Tuesday, the Big Ten announced it’s new schedule for the 2018-19 season and with it the first 20-game schedule of conference games in league history.

That fact meant change was going to happen, but it happened in a dramatic way for the 2018-19 season.

For the first time in a long time, the Big Ten will have conference games in November. A pair of games on Nov. 30th will tip-off the conference season, as Iowa will play host to Wisconsin in a big rivalry game and Michigan State will go to Rutgers.

The games come hot and heavy over the first week of December as well, as at least one Big Ten matchup will take place daily from Nov. 30 to Dec. 6.

That daily schedule is one the Big Ten is really emphasizing this year, as you can see as the conference goes in to overdrive following the holiday season.

After the pair of matchups for every team in the first week of December, the Big Ten will take a break until January 2, when Nebraska goes to Maryland and Northwestern will travel to Michigan State.

The schedule is more spread out this season, for fans at least, as the Big Ten continues to try and feature at least one game every day of the week during the final two-plus months of the season.

What is clear is that the Big Ten is trying to find a way to maximize rating on TV and get the most viewership possible. Gone are the days of the Tuesday-Thursday or Saturday-Monday swings from the conference as a whole.

It will be interesting to see which programs can deal with the big changes that are happening to the schedule. Those that can adapt will likely flourish, while those who resist the change could be in for a rough ride this season.

Big Ten play will extend until March 10 when we get the final matchups of the season. Those four matchups will be highlighted by Wisconsin at Ohio State.
